Single Sitting Root Canal Treatment (RCT)

 Restore decayed or damaged teeth

What is a Single-Sitting RCT?

Traditionally, root canals involve multiple appointments to clean out an infected tooth and save it from extraction. However, advancements in technology and techniques allow us, in some cases, to complete the entire procedure in just one visit. This can be a great option for patients who prefer fewer appointments or have busy schedules.

Who is a good candidate?

Unfortunately, not everyone is suitable for a single-sitting RCT. Here are some factors I consider when making this decision:

  • Severity of infection: If the infection is mild to moderate and hasn’t spread to the bone, a single visit may be possible.
  • Number and complexity of canals: Teeth with fewer, straighter canals are generally easier to treat in one sitting.
  • Accessibility of the canals: I need to be able to access and clean all the canals effectively for a successful outcome.
  • Your medical history and overall health: Certain medical conditions may require a multi-visit approach for safety reasons.

Benefits of Single-Sitting RCT:

  • Reduced number of appointments: This can be a major advantage for busy individuals or those who have dental anxiety.
  • Potentially lower cost: While the price per visit may be similar, fewer appointments can translate to lower overall treatment cost.
  • Faster recovery: You may experience relief from pain and sensitivity sooner compared to a multi-visit approach.

What to expect during the procedure:

Here’s a general outline of what you can expect during a single-sitting RCT:

  1. X-ray and anesthesia: I’ll take an X-ray to assess the infection and administer local anesthesia to numb the area around the tooth.
  2. Access and cleaning: I’ll create an opening in the tooth and remove the infected pulp tissue and debris from the pulp chamber and root canals.
  3. Shaping and cleaning: Using small instruments, I’ll shape and clean the canals to ensure thorough removal of bacteria.
  4. Filling: The cleaned canals will be filled with a special material to prevent reinfection.
  5. Temporary restoration: A temporary filling or crown will be placed to protect the tooth while a permanent restoration is made.
  6. Permanent restoration: At a later appointment, you’ll return for a permanent crown or other restoration to restore the tooth’s function and appearance.

Important points to remember:

  • While the RCT itself is completed in one visit, follow-up appointments are crucial to monitor healing and ensure the treatment’s success.
  • Single-sitting RCT may not be suitable for every case, and sometimes, a multi-visit approach might be necessary.
  • It’s essential to discuss your individual situation and concerns with me to determine if a single-sitting RCT is the best option for you.
