Bleeding gums are a warning, not a habit.

Gum disease is one of the most common reasons adults lose teeth — and in its early stages it is completely reversible. Our periodontics team treats it from routine deep cleaning through to laser-assisted gum therapy.

What we treat

From gingivitis to periodontitis

Plaque that isn't removed hardens into tartar along the gum line. The gums react with inflammation — redness, swelling and bleeding. This is gingivitis, and a professional clean plus better home care usually reverses it.

Left untreated, the infection can spread below the gum line and destroy the bone that holds teeth in place (periodontitis). Treatment then focuses on deep cleaning the roots, controlling infection and stabilising the teeth.

Signs to watch for

Signs of gum disease

  • Gums that bleed when brushing or flossing
  • Red, swollen or tender gums
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Gums pulling back from the teeth, or teeth feeling loose

Smoking, diabetes and pregnancy can all make gum problems worse — tell us about them at your visit so we can plan the right care.

FAQs

Gum Treatment — common questions

Is gum disease curable?

Early gum disease (gingivitis) can be reversed completely. Advanced gum disease can be controlled and stabilised with treatment and regular maintenance visits.

Does deep cleaning damage teeth?

No. Scaling removes hardened tartar, not tooth enamel. Teeth may feel slightly sensitive for a few days afterwards while the gums settle.

How often should I get my teeth cleaned?

For most people every six months. If you've been treated for gum disease we may recommend every three to four months.

What does laser gum treatment do?

A dental laser helps remove infected tissue and reduce bacteria in gum pockets with less bleeding and discomfort, and usually quicker healing.
