Wisdom teeth often don't have enough room to come through properly. When they cause pain, swelling or damage to the tooth next door, removing them is usually the simplest long-term fix — and our oral and maxillofacial surgeons do it routinely.
A wisdom tooth that is impacted — stuck under the gum or angled against the neighbouring molar — can trap food and bacteria, leading to repeated infection, gum swelling and decay in the tooth beside it.
We start with an X-ray to see the tooth's position and its relation to nearby nerves. Many wisdom teeth can be removed simply; impacted ones need a minor surgical procedure under local anaesthesia.
Not every wisdom tooth needs removing. If it has come through straight and can be cleaned properly, we may simply monitor it.
The area is fully numbed, so you should feel pressure but not pain during the procedure. Some swelling and soreness for two to four days afterwards is normal.
Most people return to normal routine within a few days. Full healing of the socket takes a few weeks; we give clear aftercare instructions to keep it comfortable.
Not necessarily. We advise based on which teeth are causing problems or are likely to. Sometimes it makes sense to do both teeth on one side in the same visit.
Soft, cool foods for the first day or two — curd, khichdi, soups that aren't too hot. Avoid straws, smoking and spitting forcefully for the first 24 hours.
